PLOUHARNEL : BETWEEN THE OCEAN AND ANTIQUE MYSTERIES
PLOUHARNEL is in the same time made of a wonderful bay, a tumultuous ocean that comes and grounds on 10 km-long beaches of thin sand
The sunnyness, the oceanic climate are a constant invitation to experiences and emotions provided by the sea.
As a real bridge between the continent and the QUIBERON peninsula, the communes Western coastal façade spreads on Brittanys largest dune massif, formed around 2000 ago thanks to a light retrogression of the sea level. The combined action of the swell and dominant winds erected the dune along the shore linking Quiberons Island to the continent through a tombolo.
In the South, a vast bay develops, which is transformed at low tide in a over 350-hectare large mud flat, inhabited by numerous sea birds. Cormorants, herring gulls , grey herons, little egrets and more live there during their migratory period.
The culminating point is located northward in the named place Mané er Mor, it is 33 metre high and unveils a multiple-facet landscape. Enclosure, heath, pine forests coexist and present a mix of unsuspecting range of Breton colours and identities.
Megalithic remains, traditional hamlets, chapels, fountains, lavatories, windmills mark out hiking trails and entice to discoveries alone or in family
The old town authenticity with houses that date from the 16th and 17th centuries, its narrow streets, calmness and serenity of the two benedictine abbeys come and complete a remarkable and colourful picture that lies between the ocean and antique mysteries.
